Today, education is for everyone. Most young children attend pre-school programs, with children with disabilities receiving additional services through Early Intervention. At age 6, the law mandates and requires a free public education for all children through 12th grade or age 21 for students with disabilities generally provided through Special Education services. Education for adults is considered a lifelong process, with many people attending school– to earn a GED, learn to read, brush up on job skills, learn to cook or paint, or gain computer skills. Good Schools Pennsylvania is a statewide organization of parents and citizens concerned about adequate and equal public education around the state. It is concerned with fair funding for all the counties in Pennsylvania. It is organized around a number of chapters that meet monthly, write to legislators, hold vigils in Harrisburg, and in general keep education issues in the forefront of people's minds. Religious organizations and colleges have taken the lead on applying pressure to the legislators to find ways to better fund public schools and assure good performance.
