The transition from school to adult living is often a difficult time for individuals with disabilities and their families. Many families do not understand that while their son or daughter has been entitled to an education since their birth, once they reach their 22nd birthday, they are only eligible for adult services.  This means that, unless they are registered for services with their local Base Service Unit (BSU) and are on waiting lists for services, it may be some time after they leave school that they may actually receive services. It also means that it is now mainly up to the individual with disabilities and their family to seek out the services and supports they need to lead a quality life as an adult.

Since 1990, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) made transition planning mandatory for all students who receive special education services.  The transition planning process begins at age 14 when a statement must be included in their IEP which addresses what course of study they will follow (for example academic for college bound students or vocational education for those students who plan on working at the completion of their education).  At age 16, the IEP must contain a statement of the kinds of transition services the student will need upon completion of their education. It is at this point that it is important for the school and the adult service system to come together to make the transition to adult living as smooth as possible.  It is important for parents and the students to understand this process and the need to have a solid transition plan in place during their final school years.
